Birmingham, second largest city of the United Kingdom and a metropolitan borough in the West Midlands metropolitan county. It lies near the geographic centre of England, at the crossing points of the national railway and motorway systems. The city lies approximately 110 miles (177 km) northwest of London. Birmingham grew rapidly as a result of the industrial revolution, and there's still a lot of heavy industry in the city - but at its heart are some fabulous treasures to find. Birmingham has three universities and two university colleges and outside of London is the largest centre of higher education in the United Kingdom. It’s cultural institutions include the Birmingham Royal Ballet, the Barber Institute of Fine Arts and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
